Note that we had to hit the "pause" button on our reblogging activities a while ago (mainly because we ran out of time, but also because we received complaints from a major image stock company about some images that were displayed on | rblg, an activity that we felt was still "fair use" - we've never made any money or advertised on this site).
Nevertheless, we continue to publish from time to time information on the activities of fabric | ch, or content directly related to its work (documentation).
Seen everywhere online these days and now on | rblg too... Yet another "trojan horse" by Google to turn you into a mobile and indoor sensor for their own sake (data collection, if I said so). And soon will we be able to visit your flat or the ones of your friends through Google Maps/Earth, or through a constellation of other applications. After clicking at the door, of course.
But also, as it is often the case with such devices, an interesting tool as well... On top of which disruptive apps will be built that will further mix material and immaterial experiences and that will further locate parts of your "home" into "clouds".
As it consists in an open call for ideas, before they'll give away 200 dev. kits, don't hesitate to send them a line if you have an unpredictable one (this promiss to be very competing...)!
“Our current prototype is a 5” phone containing customized hardware and software designed to track the full 3D motion of the device, while simultaneously creating a map of the environment. These sensors allow the phone to make over a quarter million 3D measurements every second, updating its position and orientation in real-time, combining that data into a single 3D model of the space around you.
“It runs Android and includes development APIs to provide position, orientation, and depth data to standard Android applications written in Java, C/C++, as well as the Unity Game Engine. These early prototypes, algorithms, and APIs are still in active development. So, these experimental devices are intended only for the adventurous and are not a final shipping product….”
The chip achieves unprecedented accuracy by processing information from many different sensors.

Broadcom has just rolled out a chip for smart phones that promises to indicate location ultra-precisely, possibly within a few centimeters, vertically and horizontally, indoors and out.
The unprecedented accuracy of the Broadcom 4752 chip results from the sheer breadth of sensors from which it can process information. It can receive signals from global navigation satellites, cell-phone towers, and Wi-Fi hot spots, and also input from gyroscopes, accelerometers, step counters, and altimeters.
The variety of location data available to mobile-device makers means that in our increasingly radio-frequency-dense world, location services will continue to become more refined.
In theory, the new chip can even determine what floor of a building you're on, thanks to its ability to integrate information from the atmospheric pressure sensor on many models of Android phones. The company calls abilities like this "ubiquitous navigation," and the idea is that it will enable a new kind of e-commerce predicated on the fact that shopkeepers will know the moment you walk by their front door, or when you are looking at a particular product, and can offer you coupons at that instant.
The integration of new kinds of location data opens up the possibility of navigating indoors, where GPS signals are weak or nonexistent.
Broadcom is already the largest provider of GPS chips to smart-phone makers. Its new integrated circuit relies on sensors that aren't present in every new smart phone, so it won't perform the same in all devices. The new chip, like a number of existing ones, has the ability to triangulate using Wi-Fi hot spots. Broadcom maintains a database of these hot spots for client use, but it says most of its clients maintain their own.
A company that pioneered the construction and maintenance of these kinds of Wi-Fi hot spot databases is SkyHook Wireless. Skyhook CEO Ted Morgan is skeptical that Broadcom can catch up to his company's software-based system allowing for precise indoor location. "Broadcom is just now talking about something we have been doing for seven to eight years, uncovering all the challenges," says Morgan. These include battery management and cataloging a new wave of mobile Wi-Fi hot spots. "Broadcom has never done major deployment," adds Morgan.
Scott Pomerantz, vice president of the GPS division at Broadcom, counters that "the big [mobile] operating systems all have a strategy in place" to create their own Wi-Fi databases. Pomerantz isn't allowed to name names, but one of Broadcom's biggest customers is Apple, which previously used Skyhook for location services in its iPhone but now employs its own, Apple-built location system.
At least one feature of Broadcom's new GPS chip is entirely forward-looking, and integrates data from a source that is not yet commercially deployed: Bluetooth beacons. (Bluetooth is the wireless standard used for short-range communications in devices like wireless keyboards and phone headsets.)
"The use case [for Bluetooth beacons] might be malls," says Pomerantz. "It would be a good investment for a mall to put up a deployment—perhaps put them up every 100 yards, and then unlock the ability for people walking around mall to get very precise couponing information."
"The density of these sensors will give you even finer location," says Charlie Abraham, vice president of engineering at Broadcom. "It could show you where the bananas are within a store—even on which shelf there's a specific brand."

Mais il y a un autre moyen, d’autant plus simple qu’il est automatique : avoir un iPhone et permettre sans le savoir à Apple de pister nos moindres déplacements.
La découverte est signée Alasdair Allan et Pete Warden, deux spécialistes qui l’ont annoncé aujourd’hui à la conférence Where 2.0 après l’avoir explicité sur le site Radar. Leur trouvaille peut être résumée ainsi : les iPhone et iPad 3G fonctionnant sous le système d’exploitation iOS4 (disponible depuis juin 2010) enregistrent régulièrement la localisation des produits dans un fichier caché, dont le contenu est restauré à chaque sauvegarde ou migration d’appareil.
Concrètement, d’après Radar, les localisations sont stockées dans un fichier appelé consolidated.db, avec coordonnées géographiques évoluant en fonction de la date d’enregistrement. La chose n’est pas toujours archi précise, triangularisation oblige, mais un test auprès des collègues de Liberation.fr montre le genre de données ainsi enregistrées :
Un logiciel baptisé iPhone Tracker est disponible pour lire à son tour ce genre de traces. En mouvement (soit en faisant évoluer la chronologie), ça donne ça :
Radar précise qu’à ce stade, rien ne prouve que ces données puissent échapper au contrôle de l’utilisateur (comprendre : être envoyées via le Net à des serveurs cachés contrôlés par de maléfiques Big Brother en puissance suivant la moindre de nos traces). De même, l’existence même de ce type d’informations n’est pas en soi une nouvelle : les opérateurs téléphoniques en disposent et peuvent les transmettre aux autorités dans certaines circonstances (enquêtes, etc.), mais uniquement sur demande en bonne et due forme (mandat, par exemple). Le problème ici soulevé est que le fichier en question n’est pas du tout crypté, donc facilement accessible en cas de vol ou d’emprunt de téléphone, par exemple. Des fonctionnalités permises par l’iOS4, comme la classification automatiques des photos prises par l’iPhone en fonction du lieu de la prise de vue (cf capture à droite), peuvent éventuellement constituer une piste d’explication quant à la présence d’un tel fichier dans le téléphone.
Parmi les pistes suggérées par Radar pour éviter ce genre de désagrément, on peut citer l’option « Encrypt iPhone Backup » accessibles via les paramètres d’iTunes une fois l’appareil connecté à l’ordinateur. Pour la petite histoire, Peter Warden a travaillé durant cinq ans pour Apple (mais jamais directement sur l’avancée de l’iPhone), avant de quitter l’entreprise « en bons termes » il y a trois ans. Sur la page permettant de télécharger iPhone Tracker, qu’ils ont conçus eux-même, les deux geeks semblent presque déçus de leur découverte : « on est tous les deux de grands fans des produits Apple, et on ne prend vraiment aucun plaisir à mettre en avant ce problème ».
Sure, it seems like there's an app for everything. But we're not quite there yet. There are still many practical problems with seemingly simple solutions that have yet to materialize, like this:
I wish someone would use the foursquare API to build a cab-sharing app to help you split a ride home at the end of the night.

I wish there was a website where non-profits could ask for what they need and people could work for them from home.
Meet the Internet Wishlist, a "suggestion box for the future of technology." Composed of hopeful tweets from people around the world, the site ends up reading like a mini-blog of requests for mobile apps, basic grand dreaming, and tech-focused humor posts. All kidding aside, though, creator Amrit Richmond hopes the list will ultimately lead to a bit of demand-driven design.
To contribute, people post an idea on Twitter and include #theiwl in their tweet. Richmond then collects the most "forward thinking" onto the Wishlist website. (Full disclosure, she's a former Art Editor here at GOOD and now a creative strategist for nonprofits and start-ups.)
"I hope the project inspires entrepreneurs, developers and designers to innovate and build the products and features that people want," Richmond says. "I see so many startups try and solve problems that don't need solving. ... I wanted to uncover and show what kinds of day-to-day problems people have that they want technology to solve for them."
The list already has an active community of posters, who are quick to point out when there's already an app or website fulfilling a poster's wish. For instance, several commenters pointed out that people can already connect with nonprofits and do micro-volunteering from home through Sparked.
Situationist is an iPhone app that attempts to make your everyday life more experimental and unpredictable. Inspired by the Situationist International of the 50′s, who advocated experiences of life being alternative to those admitted by the capitalist order, for the fulfillment of human primitive desires and the pursuing of a superior passional quality, the app takes on the “situation” element of the movement, attempting to create random rendezvous and interactions with strangers to induce the unpredictable.
Using the iPhone and it’s geolocation features, the app alerts members to each other’s proximity and gets them to interact in random “situations”. These situations vary from the friendly “Hug me for 5 seconds exactly” or “Compliment me on my haircut”, to the subversive eg “Help me rouse everyone around us into revolutionary fervour and storm the nearest TV station”. Members simply upload their photo and pick the situations they want to happen to them from a shortlist, in the knowledge that they might then occur anywhere, and at any time.
Situationist was created by Ben Carey and Henrik Delehag aka Benrik. Benrik’s mission is to remodel the current world into something more to their liking, adding idea by idea to the sum total of radical thinking and inspiration. They work across all forms of cultural production, looking for cracks, openings and other loopholes.
After retiring the floppy disk in March, Sony has halted the manufacture and distribution of another now-obsolete technology: the cassette Walkman, the first low-cost, portable music player.
The final batch was shipped to Japanese retailers in April, according to IT Media. Once these units are sold, new cassette Walkmans will no longer be available through the manufacturer.
The first generation Walkman (which was called the Soundabout in the U.S., and the Stowaway in the UK) was released on July 1, 1979 in Japan. Although it later became a huge success, it only sold 3,000 units in its first month. Sony managed to sell some 200 million iterations of the cassette Walkman over the product line’s 30-year career.
Somewhat ironically, the announcement was delivered just one day ahead of the iPod’s ninth anniversary on October 23, although the decline of the cassette Walkman is attributed primarily to the explosive popularity of CD players in the ’90s, not the iPod.

R.I.P. the "cassette walkman". I thought it was already gone for years! Now this is the occasion to light up a candle.
